HandiRamp has been manufacturing ramps since 1958, making it the oldest custom ramp manufacturer in the world. Following the death of its founder, HandiRamp was on the brink of bankruptcy in 1995. Thom Disch took over as President and CEO that year. Disch recognized the growth opportunities presented by the legal requirements of The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which had been enacted in 1991, and the prospective demand from the needs of the aging baby boomer generation.
Disch took HandiRamp and created a solutions company. Besides manufacturing wheelchair and accessibility ramps, HandiRamp also designs and fabricates solutions for industrial and material handling applications like yard ramps, cargo van ramps, dock plates, and more. We pride ourselves on creating high-quality personalized solutions that are constructed in-house at our facility in Kenosha, WI.
To better serve our customers and community, HandiRamp has sponsored the website www.ramps.org since September 2006. Designed to assist individuals, families, and businesses in their quest for accessible properties and services is the premise of the website. Disch envisioned a nationwide program that would put resources at the fingertips of those looking for accessibility ramps in order to make the process simple and pain-free. The website offers education on the construction and installation of ramps and hosts a growing list of organizations that can help fund accessibility ramp purchases.
Since funding is a major concern and barrier for many individuals, HandiRamp created the non-for-profit organization, The HandiRamp Foundation. The foundation works to provide funding to assist qualified candidates in their purchase of accessibility equipment.
