A Visit From Mom
I received a call earlier in the week from a customer in Texas whose mother is visiting later this spring. Due to the home’s architecture there is a sunken living room that sits a few feet below the house’s foundation requiring two stairs between the family room and kitchen. Her mother is wheelchair bound, dependent on others to move anywhere.
What Size Ramp? How Do I Measure the Rise?
After she explained that she needed a ramp for the sunken living room the question the customer normally asks is, “What do you need from me?” We then asked her for the rise. The word rise is unfamiliar to most customers and so I explained what the rise is and how it helps us determine the correct ramp size. In her case the rise was measured from the bottom of the sunken family room to the top of the two stairs that led to her kitchen. The customer wanted to make it clear the ramp would only be utilized when her mother was visiting.
Portable Ramp Selection
I then explained to her the selection of portable ramps that Handi-Ramp sells and how they would fit her situation. She could set up the ramp easily when her mom was in down and take it down and store it after that. Within minutes, she had a clear understanding of the ramps, their individual benefits and options, and pricing.
After placing her order, I took her through the different purchasing follow up steps that we perform, which includes an e-mailed copy of her invoice and tracking that she would receive later later that day.
A Better Understanding of ADA Guidelines
Overall, the conversation went very well and now the customer has a clear understanding of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) guidelines, and the types of portable ramps we offer. She was very excited to be receiving her portable ramp for the sunken living room later in the week.

One important thing to consider when getting a mobile ramp is the size and the weight–since you’d be carrying the thing around when it comes to moving around a family member who’s wheelchair-bound and needs accessibility in order to be able to get around without too much difficulty. At the same time, explaining how portable ramps work to first-time customers might be a bit of a challenge, but in time they would come to understand why the necessity for them is as such. If I had a chance to get a portable ramp I would check for size and weight limit first before making a purchase, of course.
