Aging in Place, an Alternative to Moving

My Grandparents have lived in their house for over 50 years. Six months ago, my grandmother tripped and fell down the stairs while carrying laundry up to the bedroom.  It was everyone’s worst nightmare, only now it was our reality.

My mom and dad got the call around 8pm and there we were heading to the hospital expecting the worst.  Luckily, it was just a broken ankle, but what could happen next?

My family got together once my grandma was released to discuss how we would prevent this from happening again, because we all know that the next time could be way worse.  My uncle suggested moving them to a smaller more conveniently accessible home.  My grandparents totally refused because this was their home and there were too many memories there to just leave because of a broken ankle.  So, my mom contacted a company that could create an accessible lifestyle just where they wanted to be, at home!

Handi-Ramp, based in Chicago, designed a custom ramp system for easy and safe access to the house as well as helping us get set up with the option to later install a stair glide to access the second floor safely.  They also had a large selection of smaller portable ramps to use for the one step up (or down) to the living areas on the first floor.  What a relief!
