What is the best option for stair repair? Pour new concrete or repair stairs with HandiTreads?
Have you recently made a decision to repair your stairs? Have they been deteriorating or deemed unsafe by a family member or neighbor? What if you had concrete stairs that were structurally sound, but the surface was pitted with grooves that made it unsafe?
You could weigh the option of replacing the concrete attempt to repair the steps. For most of our customers it usually boils down to the short term cost. Do you spend hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars to repair the step, or is there an alternative?
You can’t beat the cost of HandiTreads & The Lifetime Residential Guarantee
Non slip Handi-Treads are so affordable that customers almost always pick this inexpensive stair repair over constructing brand new concrete steps. Non slip treads are available in nosings (cover the edge of the stair) whereas treads cover the flat surface. And with a lifetime residential guarantee, homeowners can’t go wrong.
Step 1 Measure the Dimensions of the Stair and Landing
The first step to calculating a suitable tread size is to measure the dimensions of the stair and landing. For this special project, which included not only repair of stairs but also the flat surfaces, we need measurements of the length width and height – all dimensions of the staircase. Write down all of these dimensions section by section. For example:
Stair 1–5 – height x length x width (the second section will have the same length and width as will the next four stairs in this photo).
Landing – Measure the length and width
Stairs 5-9 – Height and length should be the same, but measure it just to be sure.
Step 2 Get an estimate for the cost from Handi-Ramp
Once you have the measurements, call the Handi-Ramp stair repair experts to get an estimate of the repair project. Then after placing your order, delivery time is about 1-2 weeks. Ask your HandiTreads expert for more details about tapcons vs. pin drive anchors for fastening in the treads to the concrete stairs.
Step 3 Gather the items you’ll need for installation
After receiving your order you’ll need to gather the items you’ll need for installation (tape measure, 3/16” concrete drill, treads, pin drive anchors, and of course the treads. Begin drilling from the bottom stair. If you are screwing the treads into concrete use tapcons. If you are hammering in the treads used pin drive anchors.
Step 4 Prepare the Drill, Start Drilling and Clean the Drill Hole
Mark off the 3/16” cement drill with electrical tape 1” from the bottom. This will serve as a guide for how deep to drill. The flat raised button surface should be secured while you drill from the exterior surfaces inwards. Drill down 1” from the surface of the tread, and then clean out the hole with a vacuum cleaner, removing all powder left from drilling, to ensure good contact.
Step 5 Hammer in the Pin Drive Anchor
Next, hammer in the pin drive anchor until flush with the surface. Once in place the pin drive anchor will expand to create a wedge.
Step 6 Repeat steps 1-5 for remaining holes around HandiTreads
Continue drilling and hammering each anchor from the interior holes outwards from the bottom of the stairs to the top.
Congratulations! You now have a finished stair repair using HandiTreads Nosings and Treads with a wonderful non slip surface that will last a residential lifetime.

What if the concrete stairs are not sturdy or are crumbling? I would assume they would need to be repaired first before applying this. Is there a place in San Antonio, Tx that sells this?
Thanks
Hi Michael, if the concrete steps are in decent shape (meaning they won’t crumble when stepped on) you may want to invest in our 48″ treads. They’ll prevent someone from slipping on the concrete, and protect the surface underneath by providing a ‘bridge’.
