Grab Bars Assure Grandmother’s Safety in Restroom

The two most dangerous rooms in your home are the bedroom and bathroom.  Did you know every year about 235,000 people over age 15 visit emergency rooms because of injuries suffered in the bathroom, and almost 14 percent are hospitalized? (NYTimes.com, 2011).

Whether we’ve thought about it or not, bathrooms are constantly used each day to put on makeup, check our hair, shave, shower, etc.  According to the LATimes, most injuries occur when entering or leaving the shower; whereas, the least common injury is tripping on or near the rug.

In mid to late 2013, Handi-Ramp was contacted by a local family who was in the process of moving their grandmother into their home. The family wanted to take every precaution to ensure she would be safe and sound, especially in the bathroom.

After a few conversations, Handi-Ramp assisted the family with choosing suitable grab bars to be mounted above her tub and adjacent to the toilet.  The family also chose to have Handi-Ramp install the bars since we are a local company.

Above the tub we installed a Dependa-Bar used to provide moving support when standing or sitting.  On either side of the tub we installed an easy-mount grab bar, used to provide additional support for pushing on to stand up.  Near the toilet we installed a support rail, allowing the grandmother to grab onto the double bar when she needs it.

The family’s grandmother moved the grandmother in full time a week after Handi-Ramp installed the bathroom safety bars. Handi-Ramp later received great feedback stating that the grandmother loves all the modifications.
