Doing What You Love Despite ALS and a Wheelchair Lift

During the summer of 2012, we received an e-mail inquiry to provide a wheelchair lift and platform for a gentleman suffering from the first stages of ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease.  His wife, who initiated contact, was very pleased to find out that our company, Handi-Ramp, is based in the Chicago area.  She was also thrilled upon learning that our company was not only willing to provide a lift, but could install it and save her countless hours of online searching.

Working closely with the family, Handi-Ramp provided a porch lift, platform etc. that was installed mid-June. This allowed her husband to move himself outside and regain that sense of independence. One of the many things the disease could not allow him to do was tend to his beloved garden with his wife.

Unfortunately, this gentleman succumbed to the disease and passed away recently.

Even in the midst of this difficult time of grieving, the surviving widow reached out to the ALS Society and donated the lift to a deserving person also suffering through this dreaded disease. A platform is currently being fabricated to the recipient’s home, and greater freedom will be afforded yet another person because of this selfless act.
