How Businesses Deal with Slip, Trips, and Falls

It was Friday, the start of the weekend and I was looking forward to it.

After a slight slip on icy cement sidewalk my mind was on slip, trip and falls all weekend.

I work for Handi-Ramp. We sell safety products.  Typically when I’m out and about I am scanning for potential improvements that can be made a the businesses that I frequent.

Friday morning I had an appointment.  It had rained but I was not concerned with it as I typically wear hiking boots to work.

Slip – when the heel slips backward

Before I entered the building I slipped on some ice.  Luckily it was just a slip, but it set my weekend in motion.  This business dealt with the slip, trip and fall potential with salting the sidewalk. Better than nothing, but it could use some improvement.  Salt does not prevent ice formation all the time.

Trip – when your foot strikes an object which sends your body forwards

We were in a nice restaurant.  It was dark and hard to see.  It was a new restaurant and I was surprised to see that they designed it with different levels.  Their solution was to warn all the customers entering to “ mind the gap.”  Our company sells yellow treads that would help customers to see and be warned of the gap.

Fall – when your body moves downward from a higher to lower level

I have two last examples, a gym and a gaming arcade.  I visited a gym and noticed how well the business had placed non slip materials all over.  Sweat can be slippery and the non slip materials helped to increase the traction all over.

The arcade I went to had the remains of non slip tape.  There were lots of kids running around.  I am not quite sure that the old tape was effective.  Handi-Treads would more effective in stopping the fall.
